Can't Help But Laugh
Well moms, we did it. We have survived the first full week of school. And that deserves its own little moment of appreciation and we should all be proud!
Even though it's always sad to have a new school year roll around, I really do love the structure and schedule that it brings back to our home. I just do better when I can be more organized and in the planning mode.
What makes me sad about school starting isn't as much of sending them off for a few hours of the day, it is the fact that you are reminded very loudly that they are growing up! We are in mom mode sun up to sun down and that makes it easy to get wrapped up in them being little that it is easy to forget that they are growing and changing right before our eyes. But those back to school pictures, that will do it. Those pictures that we take each year are a very loud reminder that they are getting bigger and it is happening quickly! Don't get me started down the rabbit hole of comparing those first day of school pictures to last years.. and the years before..
But that is enough of the sad vibes. The title of this blog is literally can't help but laugh, so why don't I get to the story that made me want to title it that in the first place.
Our mornings around here are a little hectic getting everyone ready for school and out the door on time. Doing my absolute best to make sure that no one is woken up on the wrong side of the bed, avoiding breakfast meltdowns because they decided that they don't actually like the food they ate yesterday anymore, fixing hair without getting anyone's hair pulled or shirt wet from spraying down the extreme bed head we have around here...yeah, it's a fine juggling act to make sure that they are happy and out the door with a smile so that I can do my best to give them the start that they need for a good day at school.
Every morning, Jaxon and Jarett put their shoes on and get themselves in the car by themselves while I grab backpacks and Jordan (who is is entirely own different level of trying to keep happy in the morning....we are STRONGLY in the "I do it" phase with him) and then everyone buckles up on their own -yes, even Jordan- and then we are on our way to school.
Well, Wednesday morning when we jumped out of the car to walk in to school, Jarett gets out of the car and doesn't even realize that he forgot to put his shoes on! They weren't in the car either, he just completely forgot to ever grab them in the kitchen on the way to the car. When I asked him he just said with his big smile, "oops I guess I forgot!" And if you know the Jerry Smile, then you know it doesn't even give you time to be annoyed or frustrated at all. I wasn't sure I had time to go back home and get them to school without being late, so Jarett went into class with no shoes and absolutely no care in the world at all. Just happy to be there and would have gladly worn no shoes all day if that was allowed.
His principal and I both got a good laugh out of it because the situation of him forgetting his shoes really does just fit his personality. Jarett is such a care free, easy going, happy to be here kind of guy and his smile is literally contagious. That morning I had the thought that we all need to be more like Jarett when it comes to an inconvenience or if something doesn't go to plan. Maybe smiling and laughing more and trying to find the silver lining is the secret to life.
